Marco Albarran’s artwork in Deities of the South

Marco Albarran’s artwork in Deities of the South frequently includes toys, some of which he alters and some he leaves in their original form. Inspired many years ago by the toys of his young son, these toys to Albarran represent the world he saw as a child, and as well as the world of pre-Columbian Mexico. Albarran uses iconography to reference the pop culture that connects civilizations through history and periods of social change.

In “Teotl Tonauac,” Albarran represents the energy of Ometeotl, or the god of duality in Aztec belief. The central figure holds two “energies” in their hands, which represent two pathways through which we can enter life after death: either obscured and clouded with fear, or joy and celebration.

Let’s take a closer look at “Meztli” by Marco Albarran from our current exhibition @chandlerarts, Deities of the South. Meztli is the goddess of the moon in indigenous Aztec religion. Albarran has chosen to represent her here using household items, as this deity is connected to home and family.

Albarran’s sculptures are assemblages, meaning he builds them out of ready-made objects that he alters rather than primarily sculpting out of clay or other raw material. He collects objects as he finds them and stores them to use when inspiration strikes. Each element has a symbolic meaning; what do you think the purple gorilla toy represents?

“Speak to Me Softly” artist Karen Schumacher i

“Speak to Me Softly” artist Karen Schumacher is a first-generation American who has lived in Bisbee, Arizona since 2013. She received her BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and has worked her entire adult life as a textile-based craftsperson in such fields as textile restoration, machine knitting, and pattern drafting. Currently she works full-time as a traditional milliner and manager at Optimo Hatworks in Bisbee.

Karen only recently started making what she considers “art” in the last few years. This began with her “Depressing Sweaters” series, which are hand-knit sweaters about political and social issues. Each sweater is designed by Karen and takes between 6 to 10 months to complete. She received a grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts for this work in 2021 and was also invited to personally give a sweater to Senator Bernie Sanders during the 2020 election.

Karen is also an active member of her community. She is a board member of Central School Project (Bisbee’s art center), chairs the Bisbee Arts Commission, and volunteers at several non-profits. She believes that strong engagement with one’s community makes individuals better people and better artists.
