From tessellating Portuguese tiles to Yayoi Kusama’s famous dots, artists have found inspiration in recurring patterns for centuries. Some are intrigued by aesthetics, while others find ritual and rhythm in the repetition. Fixations highlights Alexandra Bowers, Talia Dudley, Denise Yaghmourian, and Hyewon Yoon's obsessions in a visible, tangible way. With each dot, stitch, and line, these artists reclaim peace in a chaotic world.

Sign up today for Art Social: Needle-felted Ornaments with Memory Bradley!

Let your imagination go wild as you explore the wonderful world of wool by creating your own felted ornament. You will learn the basics of 3D needle felting, working with various shapes to create hanging pieces of art. You can choose to create any form you want, including gnomes, mushrooms, cacti, traditional holiday shapes, as well as a variety of animals and birds. Have fun creating something for yourself or to give away - the hardest choice will be what to make during class! Led by @memorybradleyart

This casual 3 hour class doesn’t require any prior knowledge or skill, and all materials are included in the $35 class fee.

“Speak to Me Softly” artist Charissa Lucille i

“Speak to Me Softly” artist Charissa Lucille is a multimedia artist who earned their BFA in Journalism and Mass Communications from Arizona State University in 2014. They are currently sewing, self publishing, and running Wasted Ink Zine Distro. Lucille uses the mediums of quilts, photography, and zines, to explore their identity and activism as it relates to disability, neurodiversity, and queerness. Their artwork has been exhibited locally at Northlight Gallery, Phoenix Art Museum, and Raiz Gallery, and has been published in Love Quilting Magazine, UPPERCASE Magazine, Bolt Zine, Femme Fotale, among others. Lucille began embroidery and hand sewing in 2017 and began machine sewing in 2019. In 2020, they sewed and donated over 100 facemasks before they began quilting. They draw inspiration from their grandmother’s hand-mending skills and from their mother’s seamstress skills along with the intricate quilts they’ve experienced while growing up in rural Pennsylvania and Hawaii.

Don’t forget to come out tomorrow night for the opening of Deities of the South: Marco Albarrán!

Multi-media artist Marco Albarrán has been creating work in the Phoenix Valley for over 30 years. His consistent focus on pre-Conquest indigenous deities and motifs unites his diverse artistic output, which ranges from prints to large sculptures. Through a contemporary lens, Albarrán undermines preconceived notions and vague interpretations of Pre-Colombian histories and offers alternative interpretations within a modern cultural context. Deities of the South examines the roles of ancient sacred deities in a modern world and encourages viewers to consider indigenous perspectives, modular spirituality, and sacred environments.
