Jacob Meders: Familiar Territory

Vision Gallery 10 E Chicago St, Chandler, AZ, United States

In Familiar Territory, artist Jacob Meders  (Mechoopda-Maidu) updates 20th century prints depicting glorified moments from westward expansion, a historical period often romanticized from a white perspective. Meders' work centers an Indigenous viewpoint and asks viewers to reconsider the story they think they know.

Daniel Nez: Fractal Lineage

Chandler Center for the Arts 250 N. Arizona Ave., Chandler, AZ

How do you visually tell a story that has been passed down from generation to generation? Diné artist Daniel Nez takes on this challenge in his large-scale loom structures that display fragments of complete paintings. The fractal pieces represent the stories told by Diné elders about the history of their people. The deconstructed narratives urge viewers to explore the installations until they reach a vantage point where all the components align to create a full picture.

For the seven US states along the river, this means new restrictions and a changed relationship not only to the river, but also to each other. The exhibition Along the Colorado highlights artwork that explores issues around water; its scarcity, use, commodification, conservation, legality, and other issues through the lens of artists who reside in these states. Curated by Sapira Cheuk.
